Children's Vision

Clear vision for growing minds.

The way a child sees can shape how they learn, read, play and experience the world.

But children may not realise when their vision isn’t quite right, especially if it’s all they’ve ever known.
‍

That’s why regular children’s eye examinations are so important.

More than reading an eye chart

At See Eyecare, we make children's eye examinations comfortable, engaging and age appropriate. Our optometrists assess your child's vision and eye health while also considering how effectively their eyes focus and work together.

Depending on their age and individual needs, we may assess areas including:

  • Distance and near vision
  • Eye focusing
  • Eye coordination and alignment
  • Prescription requirements
  • Eye health
  • Visual development
  • Signs of myopia and its progression

‍

When should my child have their eyes tested?

An eye examination can be worthwhile even when your child hasn't mentioned a problem.

You may also consider booking an appointment if you notice frequent squinting, headaches, sitting unusually close to screens, difficulty concentrating on near work, closing or covering one eye, or concerns about reading and schoolwork.

These behaviours don't necessarily mean there is a vision problem, but an eye examination can help determine whether vision may be contributing.

Myopia in children

Short-sightedness, or myopia, frequently develops during childhood. A child with myopia generally sees nearby objects clearly while objects further away appear blurred.

When myopia is identified, we can discuss whether simply correcting their vision or actively managing its progression is appropriate.
